Santa Barbara Debut

“The Jogja Hip Hop Foundation is an energetic force in the Indonesian hip-hop scene, bringing Javanese traditions and urban street culture together to create a unique style.” The Jakarta Globe

Rapping across linguistic, musical and other borders, Indonesia’s foremost hip-hop crew stands squarely at the crossroads of global culture. This sharp, urban Javanese collective from Yogyakarta promotes tolerance and pluralism while taking on corruption and inequality with its provocative wit and infectious hooks. The group effortlessly melds global and indigenous trance beats, Indonesian pop and gamelan music, and ancient Javanese poetry and literature. Tech giant Intel, which featured the group in its Visibly Smart film series, calls Jogja’s music “a fascinating and fresh fusion of old and new Indonesia.”

Presentation is part of Center Stage, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts, in cooperation with US Regional Arts Organizations.
